Does MBUSI have any business travel restrictions?
Daimler has implemented new travel guidelines regarding international travel to Level 3 Travel Health Notice countries, as identified by the Centers of Disease Control (CDC). Please refer to the guidelines in the archived communications section
MBUSI has suspended all outgoing and incoming international business travel until further notice. Please arrange the use of electronic resources to facilitate remote meetings.
Team Members who are returning from an elevated risk area of travel according to the Center for Disease Control (https://wwwnc.cdc.gov/travel/notices) must call their manager prior to returning and work from home for at least 14 days before coming back to the office/plant.
Team Members may only return to work if they were symptom-free (symptoms include fever of 100.4 degrees or higher, cough and shortness of breath) during this period or are medically cleared. The current areas identified by the CDC as elevated risk are China, Hong Kong, Iran, Italy, Japan, Singapore, South Korea, Thailand, Taiwan and Europe.
Report all planned personal travel outside of the United States to your manager within 30 days of your trip. If you are planning a personal trip out of the country, please notify your supervisor about the trip so that the appropriate protocol is followed upon your return.
Should I report to work if experiencing symptoms of the illness? (NO DO NOT!)
Team Members returning (or Team Members with a household member returning) from a Level 3 country must stay home for 14 days and avoid contact with others. This applies to business and personal travel. This includes employees who have recently returned from Level 3 countries in the last 14 days. Employees should notify their manager immediately and they should monitor their health as follows:
- Take temperature twice a day;
- Watch for cough or trouble breathing;
- Avoid public transportation, taxis or ride-shares;
- Avoid crowded places such as shopping centers or movie theaters and limit public activities;
- Maintain a 6-foot distance from others;
- If able, the employee should work from home during the 14-day period
o During this home isolation period--which is intended to cover the potential incubation period for the virus--employee pay and benefits will be protected.
Employees must contact their subsidiary’s Disability Management or Medical Health Management representative before returning to work.
Individuals (who have not traveled to areas with community spread of COVID-19 or who have not been in contact with individuals known to have COVID-19) with symptoms of fever equal to or greater than 100.4 degrees Fahrenheit, cough, and/or shortness of breath, may not work until 24 hours free from fever without the use of fever-reducing medications. Individuals with COVID-19 (or are now symptomatic after coming in contact with COVID-19) are required to remain under home isolation precautions until the risk of secondary transmission to others is thought to be low. The period of isolation is generally 14 days. The decision to discontinue home isolation precautions should bemade on a case-by-case basis, in consultation with company healthcare providers and state and local health departments.
What if I don't have symptoms but I've been in contact with someone who has COVID-19?
If management determines that an individual has come into close contact with the COVID-19 virus, then that individual will be directed to leave Company property. The decision to return to work should be made on a case-by-case basis, in consultation with company healthcare providers and state and local health departments.
What constitutes “contact with someone who has COVID-19”?
The CDC defines close contact as:
- being within approximately 6 feet (2 meters) of a COVID-19 case for a prolonged period of time; close contact can occur while caring for, living with, visiting, or sharing a healthcare waiting area or room with a COVID-19 case
– or –
- having direct contact with infectious secretions of a COVID-19 case (e.g., being coughed on).
What should managers and supervisors be doing now?
Frequent communication with your direct reports is very important.
- Encourage employees to adhere to CDC guidance to avoid respiratory infections
- Follow current CDC guidance for businesses:
- Encourage sick employees or employees with sick family members to stay home.
- Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. If soap and water aren’t available use a hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol.
- Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands.
- Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw it in the trash.
- Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces using a regular household cleaning spray or wipe.
- Perform routine environmental cleanings of workstations and workplace
- Encourage employees to follow CDC guidelines for travel.
- Send sick employees home. (You have this authority.)
NOTE: If you send a sick Team Member home, please contact HR and Disability Management/Medical Health Management for guidance on managing subsequent absences and time coding.
Is MBUSI buying masks and gloves?
Masks are for those who are sick, not those who are well. These items should be reserved for health care facilities. Some employees with jobs requiring close contact with the public (think about individuals required to go into homes for repairs) may need to be provided with masks/respirators/gloves to help keep them safe. The use of administrative controls (delaying or canceling in-person meetings, changing work practices, encouraging cough etiquette, practicing good hand hygiene, is always preferable to having to use personal protective equipment.

As the CDC updates recommendations, we will be implementing these in conjunction with current pandemic planning. The next steps will likely involve business/community mitigation steps to reduce the spread of the virus. Business units are reviewing and updating current pandemic plans.
